Upper Mustang & Manang Himalayan Motorbike Tour

Daily Itinerary

15 stages

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Arrive in Kathmandu, the lively gateway to your Himalayan motorcycle expedition. After meeting our local team, transfer to your hotel and settle in after your journey. We will review the tour plan, discuss local riding conditions, and help you prepare safely for the days ahead. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a short walk nearby or relax at the hotel. Your guide will share practical information before the adventure begins tomorrow.

Day 2: Kathmandu Sightseeing and Motorcycle Testing

Discover Kathmandu’s cultural highlights on a guided half-day sightseeing tour, visiting historic squares, temples, and local streets where time allows. Later, meet your road captain and support team for a motorcycle fitting, safety briefing, and test ride. Check your helmet, riding gear, luggage, and controls, and discuss group riding signals and daily routines. This preparation day helps everyone feel comfortable with their motorcycle before the journey heads into Nepal’s mountain roads.

Day 3: Ride from Kathmandu to Pokhara

Leave Kathmandu Valley and follow the winding highway west toward Pokhara, tracing river valleys through Nepal’s green middle hills. The route passes terraced farmland, settlements, suspension bridges, and views of the Trishuli River, with breaks for refreshments. Traffic and roadworks can affect travel time, so the team will maintain a flexible pace. On arrival, check into your lakeside hotel and prepare your motorcycle and equipment for the mountain stages ahead safely.

Day 4: Ride from Pokhara to Tatopani

Leave Pokhara and ride toward the Kali Gandaki region, where green hills, waterfalls, and deep river valleys introduce the adventure’s rugged terrain. The route combines paved sections with rough tracks as you approach Tatopani, a village known for its hot springs. After checking in, relax and soak in the warm waters if conditions and opening arrangements permit. This lower-altitude stage offers a gentle introduction to changing road surfaces and Himalayan riding.

Day 5: Ride to Muktinath via Ghasa, Marpha and Jomsom

Ride deeper into the Himalayas through the Kali Gandaki Valley, passing Ghasa and the traditional Thakali settlements of Marpha and Tukuche. Continue through Jomsom and Kagbeni before climbing toward Muktinath, where the scenery shifts from greener valleys to dry, windswept terrain. Visit the revered temple complex, sacred to Hindus and Buddhists, including its 108 water spouts and Jwala Mai shrine when time permits. Expect changing weather, gravel, and exposed mountain sections.

Day 6: Ride from Muktinath to Ghami — Enter Upper Mustang

Leave Muktinath and ride through Kagbeni into restricted Upper Mustang, following dramatic valleys beneath red and ochre cliffs. Continue through Chele and traditional settlements, where whitewashed houses, chortens, and mani walls reflect the region’s Tibetan-influenced heritage. The road is often rocky and uneven, so ride steadily and follow your guide’s instructions. Reach Ghami, an important Mustang village, where everyone can regroup, and settle in for the night beneath the Trans-Himalayan sky.

Day 7: Ride from Ghami to Lo Manthang

Depart Ghami for one of the expedition’s off-road stages, crossing rugged high-desert terrain and passing cliffs, remote settlements, and panoramic viewpoints. Allow time for photographs while staying aware of changing surfaces and altitude. As you approach Lo Manthang, the historic walled capital, its whitewashed buildings and traditional architecture emerge from the arid landscape. Located at around 4,000 metres, this settlement offers a memorable arrival in the cultural heart of Upper Mustang.

Day 8: Explore Lo Manthang and Chhoser

Spend the day discovering Lo Manthang and its high-desert surroundings at a steady pace. Explore the walled town, traditional buildings, and monasteries, respecting local customs and any site restrictions. If conditions allow, ride toward Chhoser to see cave settlements carved into the cliffs and visit nearby villages. The schedule provides time for photography, cultural encounters, and acclimatisation. Your guide will adapt the outing to weather, road conditions, and the group’s comfort.

Day 9: Ride from Lo Manthang to Jomsom

Begin the return journey from Lo Manthang toward Jomsom, retracing tracks across Mustang’s high-desert plateau. Mountain passes, weathered cliffs, scattered villages, and valleys offer fresh perspectives on familiar landscapes. Ride carefully over gravel, loose stones, and uneven sections, keeping suitable distances between motorcycles. Continue through Kagbeni and follow the Kali Gandaki Valley to Jomsom. This is a long riding day, so breaks and the final arrival time will depend on conditions.

Day 10: Ride from Jomsom to Pokhara

Leave Jomsom and descend through the Kali Gandaki Valley, passing the traditional villages of Marpha and Tukuche before continuing through Ghasa and Tatopani. The scenery transforms from dry, high-altitude desert to greener forests, waterfalls, and terraced hills as you lose elevation. Road surfaces vary, with rough stretches possible along the valley. Continue toward Pokhara and enjoy a well-earned evening beside Phewa Lake, reflecting on the landscapes crossed during the Mustang expedition.

Day 11: Ride to Jagat via Begnas Lake and Sundar Bazar

Leave Pokhara and turn toward the Manang region, stopping at Begnas Lake before continuing through settlements and terraced farmland toward Sundar Bazar. Follow mountain roads and river valleys toward Jagat, where the landscape becomes rugged and the journey begins to feel more remote. Conditions may vary between paved roads and rough tracks, so maintain a steady pace with the group. Arrive in Jagat and rest before the ride into the Annapurna mountains.

Day 12: Ride from Jagat to Manang via Dharapani and Chame

Follow the Marsyangdi River through mountain valleys and settlements, riding toward Dharapani and Chame before continuing in the direction of Pisang and Manang. Forested slopes gradually give way to drier alpine terrain, while Himalayan peaks rise above the route. Expect rough tracks, water crossings and changing weather, depending on conditions. Your guide will set a pace and plan breaks when needed. Arrive in Manang and allow time to rest at altitude.

Day 13: Explore Manang and Ride to Besisahar

Enjoy a morning exploration of Manang, taking in stone houses, narrow lanes, and views of the surrounding Himalayas. Afterward, begin the descent through the Marsyangdi Valley toward Besisahar, passing cliffs, waterfalls, and traditional settlements along the way. The landscape gradually becomes greener as the altitude drops. This is a substantial riding stage, so departure timing and breaks are important. Follow your guide’s advice and stay hydrated throughout the changing mountain conditions.

Day 14: Ride from Besisahar to Kathmandu

After breakfast, leave Besisahar and follow Nepal’s highways and river valleys toward Kathmandu. The route passes settlements and follows sections of the Marsyangdi and Trishuli river corridors before reaching the Kathmandu Valley. The journey is mostly on paved roads, although traffic, weather, and roadworks can affect travel time. Arrive in the capital, check into your hotel, and celebrate completing an expedition through the high desert of Mustang and the Annapurna region.
